History and mission

In 2011, the Musée de l’Elysée launched the Nuit des images. Organized every year in June in the Museum’s magnificent gardens, the event explores the projected image. Artists are encouraged to let their creativity illuminate Lausanne, and Swiss and international cultural institutions are given carte blanche.  As most of the projections premiere at the event, the Nuit des images is a key moment, each summer, for the art community and the Museum’s audience.

For its third edition in 2013, the Nuit des images invited 50 artists from 15 countries, such as René Burri, Andres Serrano, Roger Ballen, Christian Lutz, William E. Jones, Geraldo de Barros ou Luciano Rigolini. They explored themes such as collective memory, architecture, the body, political and social activism, poetry, and film. Over 10,000 visitors attended the event in a convivial and festive atmosphere, also benefiting from an art book fair, music concerts, art installations created for the site, and activities for adults and children.
