reGeneration 2 Tomorrow's Photographers Today

In collaboration with the
(New York), "reGeneration 2 - Tomorrow's Photographers Today" sets out on a North American tour at the
in Toronto.
What are young photographers up to in the twenty-first century? How do they see the world? How much do they respect, build on, or reject tradition? As the digital revolution continues its relentless advance, demolishing longstanding practices in every domain of our field, curiosity builds as to how the new generation of photographers will react. Will some remain in the darkroom, or will they all migrate to the digital lab? The reGeneration project – the broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind – set out in 2005 to discover answers to these intriguing questions, previewing the work of young photographers who may well emerge as some of the finest artists of their generation. Following on from the success of this exhibition shown in ten different cities across North America, Europe and Asia, this second edition turns the spotlight on up-and-coming talents from 30 countries.
Curators at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne selected the most promising candidates from some 700 entries submitted by 120 of the world’s top photography schools. reGeneration2 showcases the inspiring creativity and ingenuity of 80 photographers about to begin a career. Together, they represent 48 photography and art schools from 25 different countries. The resulting exhibition reveals the flexibility of young photographers as they pass fluidly from one genre to another, and/or one technique to another. Impressive also is their mobility, as a European studies in China, a Japanese studies in the US, and a Peruvian in Europe. These youthful practitioners of extraordinary talent are already well on their way to making their mark.

JR - Unframed Festival Images 2010, Vevey

Unframed

Co-produced by the Musée de l'Elysée and the
, Unframed is an unprecedented urban project created for the city of Vevey, with images from the collection of the Musée de l'Elysée. The urban installations shown mark a new artistic direction in JR’s career who appropriates the images from the collections of the Musée de l’Elysée: the works of great photographers and anonymous authors become the material of his performances. JR immersed himself in these collections to bring a new approach and change the context of some major icons in the history of photography including the work of Robert Capa, Man Ray, Gilles Caron, Helen Levitt, Mario Giacomelli, Lucia Moholy, John Phillips and Sebastião Salgado. He then displays reproductions of these icons on facades which serve as ‘an exhibition space’. The city transforms itself into a giant open air museum. The images, keeping their references, even if they are used in a totally different way, take on a new meaning. Their inclusion in the public space gives a new meaning to their reading. The visitor, with a sense of déjà vu, can discover on a street corner the strength of JR’s work.

JR (France, *1984)

French artist, JR has undertaken projects for monumental urban performances. In 2007, Face2Face illegally presented huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians on both sides of the separation wall / security fence in Jerusalem. In 2008, he joined an international trip for Women Are Heroes, a project in which he emphasized the dignity of women. In 2010, the eponymous feature film competed for the Caméra d'Or at Cannes. JR has notably exhibited his work in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Arles, Berlin, Los Angeles and New York.

For more than 60 years, Irving Penn has left his mark on the world of photography through his images of fashion, still lifes and portraits. The Musée de l'Elysée pays tribute to this 20th century master of photography. Fashion photographer for Vogue, Penn photographed small trades at the beginning of the 1950s. This personal project was based on his admiration for the working classes. Recruited in the streets of Paris, London and New York, the models came to Penn's studio in their work clothes. Salesmen, newsagents, rag and bone men, chimney sweeps, all posed in the neutral territory of the studio of the New York photographer who was convinced that many of these activities would disappear. The exhibition is organised by the John Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles, which in 2008 acquired the most complete collection of this series.

The catalogue
The catalogue of the exhibition, published by the John Paul Getty Museum, brings together their collection of the Small Trades series as well as an interview with Edmonde-Charles Roux, the editor in chief of Vogue who assisted Penn when he undertook this project in Paris. The publication unveils to the public for the first time this extraordinary collection of portraits produced between 1950 and 1951.

Irving Penn, Small Trades
Text by Virginia A.
