Jacinthe Robillard

Canada, born in 1979

Created in 2012, the series l’étendue de mes connaissances [the scope of my knowledge] fosters an artless yet ironic approach to the notion of the identity and individuality of body language. Without informing them of her intentions, the artist invites some friends and relations to a performance. Seated at a table facing the camera, they are then asked to make an origami in accordance with the sequence of folds indicated on a panel set up in front of them. Robillard reconfigures the record of the experiment into a behavioural study, which describes the reactions of subjects faced with an unusual task that pushes them to the edge of their “comfort zone.” The series, comprised of portraits of their facial expressions, gestures, and attitudes, is accompanied by a video. As summarized in appointments’ journal, Robillard’s project culminates in the presentation against a neutral backdrop of the characteristic markers of an individual’s gestures and tics as manifested in situations of isolation and concentration.
