Switzerland, born in 1988
Deploying an extremely poetic, almost melancholic idiom, the Swiss artist Emilie De Battista explores the intrinsic relationship of the concept of memory to photography. Projecting images taken from her personal archives onto thin layers of ice, she records the slow disintegration of the “screen” as it warms up and gradually melts. Ombre portée [Cast Shadow] probes the relationship between the viewer and her memory, as, over time, the latter becomes more imprecise and partial. In addition, the small size of the digital tablets on which the nine videos are shown recalls the domestic format of souvenir photographs of the kind put on mantelpieces or stuck in family albums. Photography is no longer impression, trace, or fragment. And yet, all the while remaining a vector of memory, as the video loops ceaselessly back and forth, it forever replays its own disappearance and resurgence.
