On the occasion of the Gus Van Sant’s film retrospective and travelling exhibition, the Cinémathèque française, the Cinémathèque suisse, the Musée de l’Elysée and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema of Turin coedited a book, published by Actes Sud in 2016. Built around an interview conducted by Matthieu Orléan with the filmmaker in June 2015 in Portland, the work Gus Van Sant / Icônes draws a path through a web of images organised thematically. The book is the opportunity to explore the works of artists which Gus Van Sant claims as heritage: beat, pop, rock, or even experimental works of filmmakers, writers and plastic artists such as William S. Burroughs, William Eggleston or Harmony Korine. This monography offers also unpublished texts that provide keys for understanding this multifaceted work and links it to intimate reflections, first-hand anecdotes, as well as a very thorough speech about his filmmaking. If every author approaches one of Gus Van Sant’s apects of creation in a specific manner, all strive to deepen their reflexion on the heterogeneity of his method and his practice.
